Spring has sprung and with it comes the opportunity to plant a garden. Whether it be your own personal garden or better yet a community garden, make it a goal to get that garden planted.

Gardens are a wonderful gift to your family or community a “work of love, the gift of service, and the fruits of cooperation. There are many ways to start a garden family, friends, neighbors or local organizations” take the opportunity, that this time of year brings each one of us. Dedicate yourself to alive and vibrant food that you have nutured with your own two hands.

A garden can provide nutrition, beauty, community growth and education. You may be able to provide a garden for those that would never have the chance to have a garden. Super Spring Smoothie

Spring has sprung and with comes the desire for a refreshing life giving smoothie our recipe of the month is one of my favorite.   

Super Spring Smoothie

1 cup grapes

1 cup of blueberries

1 orange peeled

1/4 cup mango chunks fresh or frozen

1 cup fresh spinach

1 slice of lime

1 tsp of agave nectar or stevia to taste

1 scoop protein powder (rice, soy, or whey) 

1 cup ice

Put all ingredients in order listed into your commercial grade blender machice.  Run on high for approxiamately 60-90 seconds.   Serve as a delicious snack or even use as a meal replacement.  Enjoy!

Many of you have asked me of a good protein powder I would recommend, there are a couple of options I suggest to my clients.

Many of you have asked me what fruits or vegetables and herbs I would reccomend for a Power Smoothie, so I have come up with a list of my favorites and the great health benefits they can have on your body. Note this information is in no way intended to replace the advice of a medical professional.

Apple- An apple a day keeps the doctor away or so the old adtage goes, this fruit has over 347 nutrients is loaded with fiber is low on the glycemic index and tastes delicious, so of course get your apple a day.

Avacado- This is acutally a fruit and contains essential fatty acids or omega’s that your body needs to burn fat. It is also loaded with fiber and some studies have shown that it can lower cholesterol and triglycerides. It is a fruit with a very low glycemic index so diabetics can partake. So put a slice of Avacado with your next smoothie.

Basil-This flavorful herb has been shown to help prevent vericose veins and help with weight loss. It does have a strong flavor so when juicing with this herb a little will go a long way, remember to use it in pesto, bruchetta, spegehtti sauces, salad dressings and more. You are only limited by your imagination on this one.

Blueberries- This berry is by far my favorite berry to add to any fruit or vegetable smoothie. They are loaded with antioxidants which are cancer fighters. They are also help as an anti-inflammatory. Studies show that eating one half cup of blueberries a day can keep your memory sharp and help prevent alzheimers. These are a must in any smoothie or power drink.

Cabbage- Red Cabbage is my favorite it is loaded full of anti-oxidants, loads of fiber, and studies show that it can help to prevent colon cancer by 70% if eaten at least 2 times a week in your diet.

Carrots- Another favorite as they help prevent cancer as well as heart disease. One big carrot a day has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke by 70%.

Ginger- This herb aids in digestion, improves circulation, can help curbe symptoms of nausea. It will warm someone up that always seems cold. Ginger has a powerful flavor so a little bit goes a long way.

Kale- Kale contains powerful photochemicals that prevent against several types of cancer. It is also high in Calcium and protein dont forget how much fiber to keep your system moving and working properly.

I also like to use tea as a liquid base for many of my smoothies. Green tea, raspberry tea, chamomile, these give you a bit of liquid on the bottom to start with especially for very fibourous recipes.

Are you Vitamin D deficient?

Recently I found out that I was dealing with a Vitamin D deficiency. For many months I felt extreme fatigue and could barely make it through the day, my mind felt foggy and all my joints ached. I started to gain weight in the tummy area which had never happened before.   I was eating well, so I couldnt figure out what was wrong.  I tried sleeping more, exercising, eating differently, taking different vitamins nothing seemed to work.   Finally I went to my Nurse Practitionor she decided to test me for a Vitamin D defiency. Bingo my level was dangerously low.   I have started to take a perscription Vitamin D and my energy is returning.  My body is starting to feel normal again.  This problem is apparently at an epidemic level  Dr. Oz discussed this with Opra and devoted an entire show to the subject.

It seems working inside alot and our fear being in the sun without sunscreen contributes to the problem.  Many of us do not drink whole milk which is fortified with Vitamin D or eat food that contain Vitamin D. The result seems to create this problem.

Vitamin D is created when sunlight hits our body it works with a cholesterol and changes into D3.   Some actually consider Vitamin D to be a hormone.   Low blood levels of Vitamin D in turn begin to affect the function of calicum uptake.  They also affect insulin and blood glucose levels, which in turn will begin to negatively impact the thyroid.    I have learned the importance of getting enough Vitamin D.   If you have symptoms like I did , and can’t figure out what is wrong, go get tested, don’t wait another minute.  

One way to ensure you are getting your Vitamin D, is to make sure you spend 10 to 15 minutes in the sun, 3 to 5 times a week.    Food sources of Vitamin D are canned pink salmon, sardines, and Vitamin D- fortified milk.

Weightloss Tips for Spring

Well spring has sprung and swimsuit weather is only a few weeks away. If you have been hibernating inside during this long winter, you may have put on a few extra pounds. Here are some fail safe tips to remember to help you trim your waist line and get rid of those winter pounds.

Remember to drink at least 8 8 ounce glasses of good water per day, preferably with a fresh lemon squeezed into the glass.  In addition I recommend that you get at least 2 TBL spoons a day of Flax seed oil or Fish oil these contain the fat burning Omega 3,6 and 9’s.  Pay attention to when you are wanting to eat and eat only when you are physically hungry. Choose as many green leafy vegetables as you want and keep them on hand for a quick snack. Chew your food slowly savor the flavor of each bite. Your brain will get the signal that it is full faster if you eat slowly.  Try to eat 3 meals a day  4 hours apart, and have protien at each meal.  A good afternoon snack of protein like almonds or fruit like an apple will help you eat less at dinner.  Avoid eating after 7pm.   Commit to exercising at least 3 or more days a week for at least 30 minutes. Walking briskly is a great low impact exercise. Pilates is a wonderful way to burn fat and strengthen your core muscles and Yoga not only strengthens but also molds long lean muscle mass while burning fat. Gaiam has many very good DVDs in all areas of exercise for beginners to advanced participants. I use many of them when I travel.

You can put yourself on what I call the NATURES SLIM FAST PLAN, it consists of 2 Organic Rice protein green vegetable smoothies for two meals a day (this recipe is in the Tips and Recipe Section of this website) then eat one additional sensible meal with good protein and lots of green leafy vegetables.  Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D, deficiency in this nutrient can inhibit weighloss and cause weight gain around the mid-section.

The most important part is to remember to be kind to yourself. Use positive self talk. Every time you look in the mirror tell yourself how much you love and appreciate how amazing you truly are as a human being. Hypnosis or relaxation/visualization Cd’s can help you recondition yourself with the automatic self talk that will help you stay positive and achieve your goals. I have found my Hypnosis library to be the most powerful tool for keeping my mind focused on what I want to achieve whether it be weight loss or any other goal.
